H1Z1 is an upcoming MMO to be released by Sony Online Entertainment in late 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Windows. The game, announced in April 2014, is a zombie apocalypse thriller set in the United States, in which players will have to interact with resources in the world to survive, build shelters and craft weapons. It will be free-to-play through micropayments, though as of April 2014, the way the game will be monetized has not been clearly defined; a public discussion regarding the matter has been initiated by SOE's president on Reddit, alongside another regarding the inclusion of custom servers.

Gameplay emphasizes multi-player cooperation, trading, and team-building. In an interview with Adam Clegg from SOE it was made clear that unlike other zombie MMO games, the main focus will be on surviving against the zombies through team-work with other players, instead of being a player versus player environment with a zombie backdrop.

Two weeks after Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley first announced H1Z1, a pair of videos featuring members of H1Z1 dev team and various Reddit threads have yielded a surprising amount of information about SOE's upcoming zombie-survival game ahead of the H1Z1 release date.

When the popularity of DayZ (and its many, many clones) exploded last year, anyone with half a brain likely could have predicted the onslaught of zombie-survival projects that would emerge in 2014, but I'm not sure many gamers were expecting Sony Online Entertainment to enter the fray. And yet, H1Z1 may very well be one of the most exciting games to be announced this month, given the studio's prior experience with the massively-multiplayer genre.

Revealed earlier this month, H1Z1 is Sony Online Entertainment's first attempt at creating a zombie-survival title, and will incorporate many of the same mechanics that players have become familiar with in popular Steam Early Access projects like DayZ Standalone and Rust. In H1Z1, players will start out foraging for supplies and hunting the local wildlife -- a list of animals that will include everything from cattle to wolves -- before moving on to the now zombie-infested remnants of human civilization.

Eventually, you'll have enough supplies to make your own mark on the world, and players will be able to build everything from single-room shacks to sprawling compounds when H1Z1 opens its doors sometime next month. Early videos have primarily focused on smaller structures, and some of the gear that you'll find during your first few hours playing H1Z1, but SOE is promising loads of endgame content and all the tools needed for (BUZZWORD WARNING) "emergent gameplay".

Unlike Rust or DayZ, functional firearms will be incredibly rare in H1Z1, and players will frequently be forced to work with other players if they hope to take down a sizeable group of zombies (or fellow survivors). For the most part, melee weapons will be your primary means of dispatching the undead, and players will be able to craft a wide variety of blunt and edged weapons once they've collected the proper materials.

Players will also be able to work together in groups to lure crowds of zombies away from the towns, abandoned highways and other locations likely to have H1Z1's most-valuable supplies, offering an incentive for teamwork that doesn't currently exist in most of the game's existing competition.

In time, you'll even find the parts necessary to breathe new life into an automobile; giving you and/or your friends a faster means of getting around the world of H1Z1. The most successful players/groups will likely end up with a fleet of such vehicles, and enough player-protected parking for however many automobiles it takes to keep their post-zompocalyptic society afloat.

Obviously, like the vast majority of projects that debut with an Early Access label, H1Z1 will launch many of the features that SOE plans to include before the game celebrates its official launch. Among these are female characters, which the team plans to add soon after H1Z1 hits Steam Early Access, and the ability for players to spin-off custom servers via a token-based vote system.

Like any high-budget multiplayer offering, H1Z1 will boast an elaborate clan/guild system at some point down the line, but those features won't be included when the game hits Steam Early Access next month. The studio also plans to continue expanding the H1Z1 map over time, eventually adding an increasing number of cities, towns, military bases and other assorted locales to what will eventually be an enormous land mass. Should the game prove sustainable for long enough, Smedley says the team could even add non-U.S. locations at some point down the line.
